Shayla: Why doesn’t God tell me my purpose in life?
Extended question: I know we should follow God, but no matter how many times I ask him what my purpose is in life or what I am supposed to do with my life, he never answers me.
Meforshim:
First, we must establish that God doesn’t owe anyone an answer. He created us and gave us a wonderful biosphere in which to live. We rebelled against Him and He sent us prophets to teach us healthful and wholesome ways. We did not heed them and even killed some of them. So, He became flesh and dwelt among us. He did nothing but good, healing us of our diseases and teaching us wisdom. So we killed Him. He responded by giving those who believe the gift of salvation, the Holy Spirit, the New Covenant, and the Apostles to teach us. He doesn’t owe us. We owe Him. If He were to never speak again, never respond to a single prayer or heal another disease, we would STILL be in His debt.
Second, we must understand that He gives to each of us a certain amount of enlightenment; a little bit of truth that some heed and some suppress (Romans 1:18). When we obey what we know He gives us a little more. When we disobey we don’t just stay where we are – we actually darken our own minds and become a little more foolish (Romans 1:21-22).
So, my recommendation is that you obey what you already know God wants you to do and then humbly approach His throne asking in what way He would like you to obey and serve next. Don’t leave an out for yourself. Be committed to obeying no matter what the order is – and odds are you will hear from your King.
