Shayla: Why do some versions not contain the words “through his blood” at Colossians 1:14?

The words “through his blood”, are present in the KJV and NKJV, whose textual base is the Textus Receptus, but missing in the HCSB whose NT textual base is the Nestle-Aland Novum Testamentum Graece, 27^th edition, and the United Bible Societies’ Greek New Testament, 4^th corrected edition.

A copyist probably borrowed the words from the parallel passage in Ephesians 1:7 because they only appear in later copies of the Greek manuscripts. Only a minority (roughly 200 out of 600 extant) of the Byzantine manuscripts (i.e 10^th century MS 2464, 13^th century MS 614, and 14^th century MS 630) contain the words. On the other hand, the words are omitted from most of the majority text and from all the early Greek papyri of Colossians, including P15, P46, P49, and P65.

Versions like the Holman Christian Standard and the New American Standard Bible which I frequently use are not attempting to water down the importance of the Messiah’s blood atonement. This very important doctrine is clearly elucidated in many other passages like Ephesians 1:7; 2:13; 1 Peter 1:19; Hebrews 9:14 and Revelation 1:5.

They are respectfully attempting to verify that their translation reflects those oldest and most verifiably correct manuscripts in our possession.
