Our Towers

Genesis 11:1-9 HCSB  At one time the whole earth had the same language and vocabulary.  2  As people migrated from the east, they found a valley in the land of Shinar and settled there.  3  They said to each other, "Come, let us make oven-fired bricks." They had brick for stone and asphalt for mortar.  4  And they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the sky. Let us make a name for ourselves; otherwise, we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth."  5  Then the LORD came down to look over the city and the tower that the men were building.  6  The LORD said, "If, as one people all having the same language, they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.  7  Come, let Us go down there and confuse their language so that they will not understand one another's speech."  8  So the LORD scattered them from there over the face of the whole earth, and they stopped building the city.  9  Therefore its name is called Babylon, for there the LORD confused the language of the whole earth, and from there the LORD scattered them over the face of the whole earth.

          I.    The Condition Of The Earth

·         Genesis 11:1 HCSB  At one time the whole earth had the same language and vocabulary.

A.   Unprecedented Unity (“whole earth”)

B.   Unparalleled Universalism (“one language, one speech”)

Today:

·         Terms that have come to pass in the last century: “United Nations”, “Global Village”, “World Wide Web”.

·         Website exists named babelfish.com (after the tower of Babel) for instant language translation.

·         The stage is now set for a one world government, religion, and leader.

II.    The Cause Of Their Efforts

  • Genesis 11:2-6 HCSB  As people migrated from the east, they found a valley in the land of Shinar and settled there.
    1. Humanism (v. 2-3) “let us..” Self-Effort/realization, human effort
    2. Haughtiness (v. 4) “Let us make a name..” Pride (this was same as Satan’s original sin.)
      • Genesis 1:27-28 HCSB  So God created man in His own image; He created him in the image of God; He created them male and female.  28  God blessed them, and God said to them, "Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it. Rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, and every creature that crawls on the earth."
      • Genesis 9:1-2 HCSB  God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.  2  The fear and terror of you will be in every living creature on the earth, every bird of the sky, every creature that crawls on the ground, and all the fish of the sea. They are placed under your authority.
    3. High-mindedness (v. 5-6) Seeking to be “as God” (Original lie to Adam and Eve in Garden.)

Today:

·         Humanism is the predominant mindset/religion.

·         Examples of modern man’s conquests which could be said to mirror the efforts at Babel include space exploration, genetic and stem cell experimentation, cloning, and many other scientific and medical forms of “playing God.”

III.    Their Confounding By the Eternal One

  • Genesis 11:7-9 HCSB  Come, let Us go down there and confuse their language so that they will not understand one another's speech."  8  So the LORD scattered them from there over the face of the whole earth, and they stopped building the city.  9  Therefore its name is called Babylon, for there the LORD confused the language of the whole earth, and from there the LORD scattered them over the face of the whole earth.
    1. He Came Down (v.7)
    2. He Confounded their Designs (v. 7)
    3. He caused their Disbursement (v. 8-9)

Very Soon:

    • The Lord will come down…
    • He will confound the world with the rapture, Great Tribulation, and Second Coming.
    • He will cause saints, sinners, and Satan to be disbursed to their eternal dwelling places

It could be today! To sinner and saint alike: Are you ready for His soon return?
