Self-Control
Why can’t I seem
to control certain desires?
• Gal. 5:24
Note: One reason
for a lack of self-control may be that you haven’t yet become God’s child
through faith in Jesus Christ. If that is the case, it is
important to put your faith in him right away.
• Rom. 12:1
Note: The way to
become pure is to give ourselves completely to God. If we try to hang on to
just a little sin, it will eventually rule us.
What are some
steps to exercising self-control?
• Ps. 119:9
• 2 Tim. 2:5
Note:
Self-control involves first knowing God’s guidelines for right living as found
in the Bible.
You need to know
what
you must control before you can keep it under control.
Regular, consistent reading of God’s word keeps God’s guidelines for right
living clearly before us.
• Ps. 141:3
• Prov. 10:19
• Prov. 13:3
• Matt. 12:36
• Eph. 4:29
• Jas. 1:26
Note: We
exercise self-control by watching what we say. How often we wish we could call
back
words as soon as they have left our mouth!
• Rom.
• 2
Pe. 1:6
Note: We must
ask God to help us with self-control. The better we know God, the easier self-control
becomes.
When we need
help beyond our own self-control, what should we do?
• Ps. 56:3-4
• Ps. 60:12
• Ps. 61:2
Note: Our
extremity is God’s opportunity. When we face a problem or a temptation, we
should run to God for help.
Sometimes I feel
as if I’m the only one who faces temptations.
• 1 Cor. 10:13
Note: It helps
to know that others face the same temptations we do. It also helps to know that
God wants to
help us! Ask him.
What are the
rewards of self-control?
• Jas. 1:12
Note: God will
reward in heaven those who practice self-control on earth.
Promise From God: 2 Pe 1:6
Lack of
self-control brings misery.
• Prov. 25:28
One who gives
full vent to his anger acts like a fool; one who keeps himself under control is
wise.

Every Christian
can be self-controlled; it’s a fruit of the Spirit.

Self-discipline
is a gift of God.

We are commanded
to be self-controlled.

One can and must
develop self-control – put a lot of effort into it.

Both old and
young alike must learn self-control.

for everything. To be self-controlled is to do everything in its time.

our thinking.

self-control and say no to all ungodliness.

Be motivated by
Christ’s redeeming love.

Be neither
wishy-washy, nor easily moved by others.
• 1 Cor. 15:58
