God’s Forgiveness of Sin
Believers are
made as white as snow.
- Isaiah 1:18 Come now, let us reason
together," says the LORD. "Though your sins are like scarlet,
they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall
be like wool.
David sang
joyfully after he repented of adultery and God forgave him.
- Psalm
32:1-2 Blessed is he whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. 2
Blessed is the man whose sin the LORD does not count against him and in
whose spirit is no deceit.
David was
depressed until he repented and was forgiven.
·
Psalm 32:3-4 When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. 4 For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength
was sapped as in the heat of summer. Selah
God readily
forgave David when he repented and confessed his sin.
- Psalm 32:5 Then I acknowledged my sin to you and
did not cover up my iniquity. I said, "I will confess my
transgressions to the LORD "— and you forgave the guilt of my sin.
Selah
David’s
confession of sin and his cry for forgiveness occurred only by God’s grace.
- Psalm
51:1-17 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to
your great compassion blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash away all my
iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. 3 For I know my transgressions, and
my sin is always before me. 4 Against you, you only, have I sinned and
done what is evil in your sight, so that you are proved right when you
speak and justified when you judge. 5 Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful
from the time my mother conceived me. 6 Surely you desire truth in the
inner parts; you teach me wisdom in the inmost place. 7 Cleanse me with
hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. 8
Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice. 9
Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity. 10 Create in me
a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. 11 Do not
cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. 12 Restore to
me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.
13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will turn back
to you. 14 Save me from bloodguilt, O God, the God who saves me, and my tongue will sing of your righteousness. 15 O
Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise. 16 You do not
delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in
burnt offerings. 17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken
and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.
God will not
despise a broken spirit and contrite heart.
- Psalm 51:17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and
contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.
How great is
God’s forgiveness!
- Psalm 103:12 as far as the east is from the west,
so far has he removed our transgressions from us.
The Lord is kind
and forgiving.
·
Psalm 86:4-7 Bring joy to your servant, for to you, O Lord, I lift up my
soul. 5 You are forgiving and good, O Lord, abounding in
love to all who call to you. 6 Hear my prayer, O LORD;
listen to my cry for mercy. 7 In the day of my trouble I
will call to you, for you will answer me.
God calls
sinners to seek him and promises them forgiveness when they repent.
·
Isaiah 55:6-7 Seek the LORD while he may be found; call on him while he is near. 7 Let the wicked forsake his way and the evil man his
thoughts. Let him turn to the LORD, and he will have mercy on him, and to our
God, for he will freely pardon.
Jesus extends a
loving invitation.
- Matthew 11:28-30 "Come to me, all you who are
weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take
my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart,
and you will find rest for your souls. 30For my
yoke is easy and my burden is light."
Jesus forgave
the penitent woman.
·
Luke 7:47-50 Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—for
she loved much. But he who has been forgiven little loves little." 48 Then Jesus said to her, "Your sins are forgiven."
49 The other guests began to say among themselves,
"Who is this who even forgives sins?" 50 Jesus
said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you; go in peace."
Jesus forgave
the murderer on the cross (an example of one saved only by grace).
- Luke 23:43 Jesus answered him, "I tell you
the truth, today you will be with me in paradise."
Sinners are
forgiven when they repent and believe in Jesus. Like the prodigal son who
wasted all his blessings, we need to turn back and humbly return to our
heavenly Father who is waiting for us.
- Luke 15:11-32 (the parable
of the prodigal son)
Jesus tells us
to pray for forgiveness.
- Matthew 6:12 Forgive us our debts, as we also have
forgiven our debtors.
We are justified
(cleared of all guilt) by faith in Jesus; in him we find peace.
- Romans 3:21-25 But now a righteousness from God, apart
from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. 22 This righteousness from God comes through faith in
Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, 23for
all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and
are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by
Christ Jesus. 25 God presented him as a sacrifice
of atonement, through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his
justice, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed
beforehand unpunished—
- Romans 8:1,4 Therefore, there is now no
condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus… 4in
order that the righteous requirements of the law might be fully met in us,
who do not live according to the sinful nature but according to the
Spirit.
In love Jesus
died to make us holy; we are without blemish.
- Ephesians 5:25-27 Husbands, love your wives, just as
Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to
make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church,
without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.
- Hebrews 10:10, 14 And by that will, we have been made holy
through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all… 14 because by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever
those who are being made holy.
The blood of
Jesus Christ cleanses from all sin.
- 1 John 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in
the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus,
his Son, purifies us from all sin.
God graciously
forgives when we confess our sins before him.
- 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful
and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all
unrighteousness.
·
Proverbs
28:13-14 He who conceals his sins does not prosper,
but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy. 14
Blessed is the man who always fears the LORD, but he who hardens his heart
falls into trouble.
God forgives and
saves all kinds of sinners, no matter how bad they
are; he changes them.
- 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 Do you not know that the wicked will
not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the
sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor
homosexual offenders 10 nor thieves nor the greedy
nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And that
is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you
were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of
our God.
Zechariah had a
vision of the high priest in filthy clothes, which were removed and replaced
with pure white garments.
- Zechariah
3:1-5 Then he
showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD,
and Satan standing at his right side to accuse him. 2 The LORD said to
Satan, "The LORD rebuke you, Satan! The
LORD, who has chosen Jerusalem, rebuke
you! Is not this man a burning stick snatched from the fire?" 3 Now
Joshua was dressed in filthy clothes as he stood before the angel. 4 The
angel said to those who were standing before him, "Take off his
filthy clothes." Then he said to Joshua, "See, I have taken away
your sin, and I will put rich garments on you." 5 Then I said,
"Put a clean turban on his head." So they put a clean turban on
his head and clothed him, while the angel of the LORD stood by.
The Samaritan
woman, an adulteress, was saved by Jesus; she received living water.
·
John 4:4-26 Now
he had to go through Samaria. 5 So he came to
a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of
ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph. 6 Jacob's well
was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well.
It was about the sixth hour. 7 When a Samaritan
woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, "Will you give me a
drink?" 8 (His disciples had gone into the town to
buy food.) 9 The Samaritan woman said to him, "You
are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?"
(For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.) 10 Jesus
answered her, "If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for
a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living
water." 11 "Sir," the woman said,
"you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get
this living water? 12 Are you greater than our father
Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and
his flocks and herds?" 13 Jesus answered,
"Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but
whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give
him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life." 15 The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water so
that I won't get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water." 16 He told her, "Go, call your husband and come back."
17 "I have no husband," she replied. Jesus
said to her, "You are right when you say you have no husband. 18 The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you
now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true." 19 "Sir," the woman said, "I can see that you
are a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshiped on this
mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem." 21 Jesus
declared, "Believe me, woman, a time is coming when you will worship the
Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22 You
Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for
salvation is from the Jews. 23 Yet a time is coming and
has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and
truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24
God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in
truth." 25 The woman said, "I know that
Messiah" (called Christ) "is coming. When he comes, he will explain
everything to us." 26 Then Jesus declared, "I
who speak to you am he."
Peter, who
denied Jesus, was forgiven and reinstated in his office.
- John
21:15-19 When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon
Peter, "Simon son of John, do you truly love me more than
these?" "Yes, Lord," he said, "you know that I love
you." Jesus said, "Feed my lambs." 16 Again Jesus said,
"Simon son of John, do you truly love me?" He answered,
"Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." Jesus said, "Take
care of my sheep." 17 The third time he said to him, "Simon son
of John, do you love me?" Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the
third time, "Do you love me?" He said, "Lord, you know all
things; you know that I love you." 18 Jesus said,
"Feed my sheep. I tell you the truth, when you were younger you
dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will
stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where
you do not want to go." 19 Jesus said this to indicate the kind of
death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, "Follow
me!"
Jesus gave us
the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector.
- Luke
18:9-14 To
some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on
everybody else, Jesus told this parable: 10 "Two men went up to the
temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11The
Pharisee stood up and prayed about himself: 'God, I thank you that I am
not like other men—robbers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax
collector. 12 I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.' 13
"But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up
to heaven, but beat his breast and said, 'God, have mercy on me, a
sinner.' 14 "I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went
home justified before God. For everyone who exalts himself
will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."
Note: The proud, self-righteous Pharisee was
not justified, forgiven. But the humbled tax collector was justified and could
go home with peace in his heart.
Troubled sinners
cry out for mercy, and God graciously forgives; he restores us to his love and
favor.
·
Psalm 130:3-4 If
you, O LORD, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand? 4
But with you there is forgiveness; therefore you are feared.
Believers are
rescued from the dominion of darkness. They are brought into Jesus’ eternal
kingdom and forgiven of all their sins.
- Colossians 1:13-14 For he has rescued us from the dominion
of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, 14in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
God has lavished
his grace on us, choosing us, forgiving us of all our sins through the shed
blood of Christ.
- Ephesians 1:7-8 In him we have redemption through his
blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's
grace 8that he lavished on us with all wisdom and
understanding.
The prayer of
forgiveness must be accompanied by repentance.
·
1 Kings 8:33-36;
46-53 "When your people Israel have been
defeated by an enemy because they have sinned against you, and when they turn
back to you and confess your name, praying and making supplication to you in
this temple, 34 then hear from heaven and forgive the
sin of your people Israel and bring them back to the land you gave to their
fathers. 35 "When the heavens are shut up and there
is no rain because your people have sinned against you, and when they pray
toward this place and confess your name and turn from their sin because you
have afflicted them, 36 then hear from heaven and
forgive the sin of your servants, your people Israel. Teach them the right way
to live, and send rain on the land you gave your people for an inheritance… 46
"When they sin against you—for there is no one who does not sin—and you
become angry with them and give them over to the enemy, who takes them captive
to his own land, far away or near; 47 and if they have a
change of heart in the land where they are held captive, and repent and plead
with you in the land of their conquerors and say, 'We have sinned, we have done
wrong, we have acted wickedly'; 48 and if they turn back
to you with all their heart and soul in the land of their enemies who took them
captive, and pray to you toward the land you gave their fathers, toward the
city you have chosen and the temple I have built for your Name; 49 then from heaven, your dwelling place, hear their prayer
and their plea, and uphold their cause. 50 And forgive
your people, who have sinned against you; forgive all the offenses they have
committed against you, and cause their conquerors to show them mercy; 51 for they are your people and your inheritance, whom you
brought out of Egypt, out of that iron-smelting furnace. 52 "May your eyes be open to your servant's plea and to
the plea of your people Israel, and may you
listen to them whenever they cry out to you. 53 For you
singled them out from all the nations of the world to be your own inheritance,
just as you declared through your servant Moses when you, O Sovereign LORD,
brought our fathers out of Egypt."
Note: Solomon, at the dedication of the temple,
prayed that God would forgive his people if and when they should repent of
their sin and sincerely serve him.
Nehemiah wept
and confessed the sins of God’s people.
- Nehemiah 1:6-7 let your ear be attentive and your
eyes open to hear the prayer your servant is praying before you day and
night for your servants, the people of Israel. I confess the sins we Israelites,
including myself and my father's house, have committed against you. 7 We have acted very wickedly toward you. We have not
obeyed the commands, decrees and laws you gave your servant Moses.
God sweeps our
sins away and wants us to sing for joy!
·
Isaiah 44:22-23 I have swept away your offenses like a cloud, your sins
like the morning mist. Return to me, for I have redeemed you." 23 Sing for joy, O heavens, for the LORD has done this; shout
aloud, O earth beneath. Burst into song, you mountains, you forests and all
your trees, for the LORD has redeemed Jacob, he
displays his glory in Israel.
A person who is
not a Christian must believe, repent, confess Jesus,
and be baptized for the remission of his sins.
- Mark 16:16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be
saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.
- Acts 2:38 Peter replied, "Repent and be
baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the
forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy
Spirit.
- Acts 8:38 And he gave orders to stop the chariot.
Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip
baptized him.
- Acts 22:16 And now what are you waiting for? Get
up, be baptized and wash your sins away, calling on his name.'
- Romans 10:10 For it is with your heart that you
believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and
are saved.
- 1 Peter 3:21 and this water symbolizes baptism
that now saves you also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the
pledge of a good conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection
of Jesus Christ,
Christians who
sin must repent, pray, and confess their sins for forgiveness. Jesus Christ is
their Advocate with the Father. They must pray in faith for God to forgive
them.
·
Acts 8:22-24 Repent of this
wickedness and pray to the Lord. Perhaps he will forgive you for having such a
thought in your heart. 23For I see that you are full of
bitterness and captive to sin." 24Then Simon
answered, "Pray to the Lord for me so that nothing you have said may
happen to me."
·
1 John 1:9- 2: 2
9If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will
forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10If
we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no
place in our lives. 2:1My dear children, I write this to
you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks
to the Father in our defense—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 2He
is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the
sins of the whole world.
- James 1:6 But when he asks, he must believe and
not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and
tossed by the wind.
- James 5:15 And the prayer offered in faith will
make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned,
he will be forgiven.
- Matthew 6:12 Forgive us our debts, as we also have
forgiven our debtors.
God not only
puts our sins out of sight; He also puts them out of reach, out of mind and out
of existence!
a.
Out of reach:
- Isaiah 38:17 Lo, for my own
welfare I had great bitterness; It is You who has
kept my soul from the pit of nothingness, for You have cast all my sins
behind Your back.
- Micah 7:19 He will again have
compassion on us; He will tread our iniquities under foot. Yes, You will cast all their sins into the depths
of the sea.
- Psalm 103:12 As far as
the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from
us.
b.
Out of mind:
- Jeremiah 31:34 “They will
not teach again, each man his neighbor and each man his brother, saying,
“Know the Lord,” for they will all know Me, from the least of them to the
greatest of them,” declares the Lord, “for I will forgive their iniquity,
and their sin I will remember no more.”
- Isaiah 43:25 “I, even I, am
the one who wipes out your transgressions for My
own sake, and I will not remember your sins.
c.
Out of existence:
- Psalm 51:1, 9 Be gracious to me, O God, according to Your loving kindness;
according to the greatness of Your compassion blot out my
transgressions. Hide Your face from my sins
and blot out all my iniquities.
- Isaiah 43:25 “I, even I, am
the one who wipes out your transgressions for My
own sake, and I will not remember your sins.
- Isaiah 44:22 “I have wiped
out your transgressions like a thick cloud and your sins like a heavy
mist. Return to Me, for I have redeemed you.”
- Acts 3:19 Therefore repent and
return, so that your sins may be wiped away, in order that times of
refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord.
