Drug abuse

The Bible doesn’t talk about drugs as we know of them today, but it does talk very specifically about not putting things into our body that are harmful or that are not glorifying to God. Taking drugs is trying to get a “high” – a feeling of ecstasy and satisfaction that is a cheap substitute for the incredible joy that comes when the Holy Spirit controls our life.

Just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should do something.

• 1 Corinthians 6:12-13 You may say, “I am allowed to do anything.“ But I reply, “Not everything is good for you.” And even though “I am allowed to do anything.” I must not become a slave to anything…Our bodies…were made for the Lord, and the Lord cares about our bodies.

Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit.

• 1 Corinthians 6:15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself?
• 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 Don’t you know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.

The primary principle of life is God first, everything else second.

• 1 Corinthians 10:31 Whatever you eat or drink or whatever you do, you must do all for the glory of God.

We are told that everything is OK in moderation. Can’t that apply to drugs, too?

• 2 Peter 2:19 They promise freedom, but they themselves are slaves to sin and corruption. For you are a slave to whatever controls you.

Whatever has control over you is your master. If God is your master, he will raise you up and encourage you, but drugs will only tear you down and make you a slave to their addictive power.
