Change
A true Christian
can change, for God makes it possible though a spiritual renewal.
- 2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he
is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!
- Ezekiel 36:25-27 I will sprinkle clean water on you, and
you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from
all your idols. 26 I will give you a new heart and
put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and
give you a heart of flesh. 27 And I will put my
Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my
laws.
Believers are
children of God, born again by the Spirit of God.
- John 1:13 children born not of natural descent,
nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God.
- Titus 3:4-6 But when the kindness and love of God
our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of
righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us
through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus
Christ our Savior,
Empowered by
Christ, the vine, we can and must bear much fruit.
- John 15:1-5
"I am the
true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me
that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so
that it will be even more fruitful. 3 You are already clean because of the
word I have spoken to you. 4 Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No
branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can
you bear fruit unless you remain in me. 5 I am the vine; you are the
branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he
will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.
God will enable
you to change and you must.
- Philippians 2:12-13 Therefore, my dear friends, as you have
always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my
absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you to will and to act
according to his good purpose.
God calls you to
put off old sinful ways and to put on new and godly ways.
- Ephesians
4:17-32 So
I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer
live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking. 18 They are
darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because
of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts. 19
Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality
so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, with a continual lust for
more. 20 You, however, did not come to know Christ that way. 21 Surely you
heard of him and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is
in Jesus. 22 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to
put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires;
23 to be made new in the attitude of your minds; 24 and to put on the new
self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. 25
Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to his
neighbor, for we are all members of one body. 26 "In your anger do
not sin": Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27and
do not give the devil a foothold. 28 He who has been stealing must steal
no longer, but must work, doing something useful with his own hands, that
he may have something to share with those in need. 29 Do not let any
unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for
building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who
listen. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were
sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and
anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. 32 Be kind
and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ
God forgave you.
Paul gives us
specific instructions on what must be done.

Ephesians 5:1-21
Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved
children 2 and live a life of love, just as Christ loved
us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. 3 But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual
immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper
for God's holy people. 4 Nor should there be obscenity,
foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving.
5 For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or
greedy person—such a man is an idolater—has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. 6 Let
no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God's wrath
comes on those who are disobedient. 7 Therefore do not
be partners with them. 8 For you were once darkness, but
now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light 9 (for
the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) 10 and find out what pleases the Lord. 11 Have
nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do
in secret. 13 But everything exposed by the light
becomes visible, 14 for it is light that makes
everything visible. This is why it is said: "Wake up, O sleeper,
rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you." 15 Be
very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, 16 making
the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore
do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is. 18 Do
not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the
Spirit. 19 Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and
spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in
the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 21 Submit to one
another out of reverence for Christ.
The Bible gives
us rules for holy living.
- Colossians
3:1-17 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things
above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds
on things above, not on earthly things. 3 For you died, and your life is
now hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is your life, appears,
then you also will appear with him in glory. 5 Put to death, therefore,
whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity,
lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these, the wrath
of God is coming. 7 You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once
lived. 8 But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these:
anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. 9 Do not
lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its
practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in
knowledge in the image of its Creator. 11 Here there is no Greek or Jew,
circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but
Christ is all, and is in all. 12 Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy
and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with
compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each
other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another.
Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on
love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. 15 Let the peace of
Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called
to peace. And be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly
as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing
psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. 17
And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the
Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Put to death the
misdeeds of the body.
- Colossians 3:5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your
earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed,
which is idolatry.
Live by the
power of the Holy Spirit.
- Romans
8:1-14 Therefore,
there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, 2 because
through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the
law of sin and death. 3 For what the law was powerless to do in that it
was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending his own Son in the
likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in
sinful man, 4 in order that the righteous requirements of the law might be
fully met in us, who do not live according to the sinful nature but
according to the Spirit. 5 Those who live
according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature
desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds
set on what the Spirit desires. 6 The mind of sinful man is death, but the
mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace; 7 the sinful mind is
hostile to God. It does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so. 8 Those
controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God. 9 You, however, are
controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of
God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he
does not belong to Christ. 10 But if Christ is in you, your body is dead
because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness. 11 And
if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he
who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies
through his Spirit, who lives in you. 12 Therefore, brothers, we have an
obligation—but it is not to the sinful nature, to live according to it. 13
For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by
the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live, 14
because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.
Train yourself
toward godliness.
- 1 Timothy 4:7 Have nothing to do with godless myths
and old wives' tales; rather, train yourself to
be godly.
Keep working at
change; forget the things of the past and press on.
- Philippians 3:12-14 Not that I have already obtained all
this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of
that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. 13 Brothers,
I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do:
Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which
God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.
Put much effort
into living a godly life.
- 2 Peter 3:14 So then, dear friends, since you are
looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless
and at peace with him.
Use the whole
armor of God.
- Ephesians 6:10-17 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his
mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God so
that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. 12
For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the
rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and
against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when
the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you
have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then,
with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of
righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet
fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith,
with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the
Spirit, which is the word of God.
Resist the
devil.
- James 4:7 Submit yourselves,
then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
No longer use
your body to sin but to serve God.
·
Romans 6:10-23 The
death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to
God. 11 In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God
in Christ Jesus. 12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that
you obey its evil desires. 13 Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as
instruments of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God, as those who
have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to him
as instruments of righteousness. 14 For sin shall not be your master, because
you are not under law, but under grace. 15 What then? Shall we sin because we
are not under law but under grace? By no means! 16 Don't you know that when you
offer yourselves to someone to obey him as slaves, you are slaves to the one
whom you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to
obedience, which leads to righteousness? 17 But thanks be
to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you wholeheartedly obeyed the
form of teaching to which you were entrusted. 18 You have been set free from
sin and have become slaves to righteousness. 19 I put this in human terms
because you are weak in your natural selves. Just as you used to offer the
parts of your body in slavery to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so
now offer them in slavery to righteousness leading to holiness. 20 When you
were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness. 21 What
benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those
things result in death! 22 But now that you have been set free from sin and
have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the
result is eternal life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God
is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Cast off all
that hinders you.
- Hebrews 12:1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by
such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders
and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the
race marked out for us.
