How to buy a baby carrier

  1. Try on a few styles in the store to decide which style is a good fit for you and your baby. Remember, some infants dislike carriers that make them feel too confined.
  2. If you’re planning to tote your tot on long walks, choose a carrier with ample shoulder padding and lower back support. If you’re only planning to carry your baby around the house, a sling or less expensive carrier will do.
  3. To help prevent your infant from falling through the leg openings of a strap-on carrier, use the smallest setting. Another option: purchase a special infant insert.
  4. Always follow the manufacturer’s weight limits. If your baby is less than seven pounds, choose a sling or a carrier made just for preemies.
  5. Once your little one can sit up unassisted or once she weighs 20 pounds, consider switching to a framed backpack carrier, which can generally be used fro children up to 3 years old.
